Bingley Five Rise Locks volunteers nominated for Community Stars Awards
Volunteers helping look after Bingley's historic Five Rise Locks are among the latest nominees for the Telegraph & Argus Community Stars awards.
In January this year the Canal and River Trust, a new charity responsible for the 2,000 miles of waterways in England and Wales, put out an appeal in the T&A for anyone willing to give their time to be a lock-keeper to get in touch.
And the appeal got a good response from people interested in giving full-time lock-keeper Barry Whitelock a hand on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal.
The lock-keeping season, which runs between March and October, can sometimes see up to 30 boats pass through at peak times which is why extra hands were needed, said Simon Henry, of the Canal and River Trust, who made the nomination for the volunteers category.
Other categories in the awards include Good Neighbours, Fundraisers, Community Groups, Young Active Citizens and Community Champions. The winners will be announced at a ceremony at Bradford City Hall on December 4.
The awards, being run with Bradford Council, are all about recognising the district’s unsung heroes, and the last day for nominations has now been extended to Monday, September 9.
Mr Henry said the lock- keeping volunteers had been needed to help the Trust make sure the waterways flourish and survive for years to come.
He said: “This group of volunteer lock-keepers have been providing a friendly welcome and assistance to hundreds of local people and tourists, giving them a fantastic visitor experience.
“The volunteers have been providing a daily service throughout the main visitor season which enhances people’s visits to this famous Bingley landmark.
“As a key tourist attraction, it’s important members of the public feel welcome and leave inspired with a warm impression of the area as a whole.”
