Children inspired at Holme Wood books fun day

A senior Bradford councillor has praised the way the Bookstart scheme supports children to enjoy books from as early an age as possible.
The scheme’s familiar big blue mascot, Bookstart Bear, made an appearance at Holme Wood Library for the annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic.
Up to 42 children and their teddy bears enjoyed an afternoon of reading, rhymes, singing and craft activities.
They also had the opportunity to become members of the Libraries’ Bookstart Bear Club, a scheme to encourage young children aged up to five to start reading before they go to school.
Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, Bradford Council’s executive member for employment, skills and culture, said: “The picnics are fun events for all involved.
“The Bookstart charity is a great organisation which helps children to develop a love for reading from an early age.”
Charlotte Hirst, a customer support assistant at the library, said: “It was an absolutely fantastic day.
“We had a musician who was great at getting everyone involved and the children really loved reading and singing the songs.”
