Couple celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary
A couple who met while training police dogs in the 1950s have just celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Eric and Mavis Smith, 87 and 80, marked their big day with a party at Wells Spring Nursing Home, Heaton, where they now live.
The pair, who trained police dogs as civilians before handing them over to Force handlers, had spent most of their married life in Wrose bringing up their three children and also lived in Low Moor for a time.
Mr Smith worked as a shipping manager dispatching wool all over the world for G Whitaker & Co. His wife worked part time at WH Smiths in Broadway while bringing up the family.
Mr Smith was also a prominent member of various brass bands including Brighouse and Rastrick, playing the Tenor Horn.
Before the children arrived, they were keen cyclists and thought nothing of riding to the coast – usually Morecambe.
