Exam successes for brave Wibsey girl Saarah

With students across the district celebrating their GCSE results, one pupil at Bradford College enjoyed a particularly significant success.
Achieving two passes at GCSE has been a miracle for 19-year-old Bradford College student Saarah Mohammed.
On Thursday the teenager found out she had achieved a C grade in Media Studies and an E in English in the exams, which she took shortly after losing her twin sister and best friend Safiyah to the same serious lung condition she is battling.
The sisters were born with rare condition Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD), a hereditary lung condition that makes it difficult to absorb oxygen and breathe. It leaves sufferers vulnerable to developing serious viral infections.
Safiyah died in February, and the last six months have been very difficult for Saarah and her family.
They were happy Saarah was able to sit the exams at all, and are delighted she managed to achieve her C in Media Studies. She will re-sit her English exam next month.
Saarah, of Wibsey, Bradford, said: “The exams came at a bad time. Safiyah had just passed away, and I was really struggling to concentrate. I didn’t really want to sit the exams but then I thought I’ll just do my best and see.
“I’m actually quite proud of myself. I had prepared myself for the worst and although I will re-sit my English, I’m very happy with my Media Studies grade.”
Saarah, who has a 21-year-old brother, and a 14-year-old sister, plans to retake her English GCSE in September at Bradford College. She said: “I’ve had so much support at Bradford College. My personal tutor has been amazing and they are now helping me to decide how many GCSEs I will be able to cope with next year.”
Safiyah sadly died in February after complications after a bilateral lung transplant she had undergone in 2010.
Michele Sutton, group chief executive of Bradford College, said: “It is perhaps an understatement to say that these last six months have been incredibly difficult for Saarah and her family, but she has proven herself with two passes at GCSE.
“Bradford College prides itself on delivering quality support to all of its students and we are delighted Saarah will return to us in September to complete her exams.”
