It wasn’t that long ago that Bradford’s Gareth Gates was performing an acoustic set at Bingley Arts Centre. Tomorrow he’s appearing at the city’s new Skybar and Nightclub in Morley Street.
The club, due to open with a champagne reception at 9pm tonight, is in the club premises that until two weeks ago was known as Envy and before that Varsity.
The new owners, who declined to make themselves known, have reportedly spent around £10,000 redecorating the interior into a light Sky Bar and a lower level, black-painted, club area.
According to Skybar’s promotions and marketing manager Liam Staveley, Gareth Gates is due to appear at Skybar at 9pm on Sunday with his own DJ show.
Mr Staveley, who used to work as a DJ in Envy, said: “We wanted a Bradford-born lad for a Bradford-based club.”
Skybar, opposite the Tequila club and just below The Sir Titus Salt Wetherspoon’s pub on Morley Street, is in an area of clubs and bars – Che, Flares, Tokyo, Bar 1.
“This looks classier,” Mr Staveley added in his makeshift office overlooking Morley Street. “This is a place for absolutely everybody.”
He said the club would employ up to 15 people including bar staff, with two to three doormen outside and others inside.
During college and university term time the club will be open from Wednesday to Saturday night. Admission is £5 and £3 for those on the guest list.
