Woman has head shaved for Cancer Research UK
10:00am Friday 23rd August 2013 in News
A woman is having her head shaved in a public show of support for a close friend who was recently diagnosed with cervical cancer.
Talonne Banham said losing her hair seemed a fitting way to raise money and show her friend how much she wanted to be there for her.
She said the diagnosis of her friend, who has asked not to be named, was devastating.
“I moved up here when I was 16 and I was on my own and she’s been like a big sister to me and she’s just generally looked after me, so when I found out that’s what it was, it was a shock,” Miss Banham, of Bowland Avenue, Baildon.
“I just felt like I’ve got to do something to help.
“There’s nothing else I can do apart from being there.
“I’m very, very nervous, but I’m not backing out. I’m very stubborn.
“I’m not very fit, so I wouldn’t be able to do a run or anything.
“I’m doing this because there’s people who are going through chemotherapy who are losing their hair.
“It just seems pretty worthless me having hair when there’s people out there that have no choice.”
Her friend said the diagnosis, a few months ago, was not a complete surprise as doctors had found pre-cancerours cells before.
She said friends and family had been hugely supportive.
The 21-year-old hopes to raise £500 for Cancer Research UK with the sponsored shave which will be done by Refresh Hair & Beauty, in Shipley’s underground market on Friday, August 30, at noon.
“The traders’ support has been brilliant. They are like a big family in there,” Miss Banham said.
People can sponsor Miss Banham by visiting www.justgiving.com/ Tal-Banham or going along to see her on the day.
