Residents warned over fish swindle in Bingley
9:00am Tuesday 20th August 2013 in News
Bingley residents have been warned about unscrupulous door-to-door fish salespeople in the town.
West Yorkshire Trading Standards issued the warning following a number of complaints that people had been swindled.
The traders have knocked on people’s doors offering sea bass, salmon, halibut and monkfish at attractive prices and presented in impressive sample boxes.
But when the customers have opened their ‘bargains’ they find the fish is either undersized or not the type of fish they were being sold as.
Trading standards officers said some customers have paid up to £90 for the fish.
A similar scam operation was reported taking place throughout West Yorkshire in May.
Trading standards warned customers to always ask for identification from door-to- door salesmen.
Anyone affected by the scam can contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0845 404 05 06.
