MP calls for immigration curbs to stay
7:00am Monday 19th August 2013 in News
An MP is calling for temporary restrictions to the type of work Bulgarians and Romanians can do in the UK to be continued.
Shipley MP Philip Davies (Con) said no one knew how many of the 21 million people living in Romania and seven million in Bulgaria would migrate when the restrictions were lifted, in January next year.
He said “a huge influx of people” would put further strain on public services, including the NHS.
Mr Davies said: “It is absolutely irresponsible for us to open the door to millions of people who can come and work here or live here if it takes their fancy. We cannot carry on like this.
“The last Labour government said very few would come from Poland to the UK and we now know that was nonsense.
“We are a small island, we cannot continue like this.”
In 2007, Bulgarians and Romanians gained the right to visa-free travel to the UK when the countries joined the EU.
But restrictions were put in place about what kind of jobs they could have. From January, these restrictions will be lifted.
