Bradford mum's daunting Windermere swim to aid victims of abuse
A Bradford mum is tackling a daunting 10.5-mile open water swim to raise money for charity and promote awareness of sexual abuse.
Katy Woodger is swimming the length of Windermere tomorrow – a challenge that will take her at least eight hours – in aid of Bradford-based Mosaic II.
The 31-year-old, of Bowling Hall Road, will have only the support of her firefighter husband Joe, who she said will warn off passing boats from a kayak.
Mrs Woodger is a therapist who works with children and young people. She delivers training to new intakes of counsellors at Mosaic II.
Linda Colclough, director Mosaic II, said the charity offers support to families whose lives have been affected by sexual abuse.
Mrs Woodger added: “I work professionally with individuals that have experienced these sort of things.”
As part of her gruelling six-month training programme for the challenge, Mrs Woodger tackled eight miles of the lake in six hours and 20 minutes.
“The water is colder and deeper than The Channel,” she said. “But it is not just about getting in the water – hypothermia is a real risk.”
“It will take about eight hours - any longer and I am going to be getting quite cold. Joe will be giving me some awful feeding gels every hour and I’ll be drinking a carb drink.
“Weather conditions, or if I get ill, or green algae are the only things that might stop me!”
Mrs Woodger will take to the water at 8am tomorrow and hopes to arrive at Ambleside by 4pm.
“There is a nice bar there,” said Mrs Woodger. “I am intending to have a beer and some fish and chips!”
Mrs Colclough added: “When Katy first told me she wanted to raise funds for Mosaic II as well as highlight the prevalence of sexual abuse in society today, I was absolutely thrilled.
“When staff started to follow Katy on her blog we realised the enormity of the challenge she had set herself.”
