A Bradford solicitor made his first appearance at Leeds Crown Court yesterday to face a charge of fraud.

Amjad Hasan and his brother Zahid Hasan are both facing criminal charges.

Amjad Hasan, of Mountjoy Road, Edgerton, Huddersfield, is accused of making a false representation when obtaining motor insurance for himself and his brother.

The 35-year-old, who works for Khan’s solicitors in Sunbridge Road, Bradford, is alleged to have committed the offence on May 8, 2012.

Both Hasans were due to be at the ten-minute preliminary hearing yesterday morning in court four, but Zahid was excused from attending as he is away on holiday.

Zahid Hasan, 34, and of the same address, is charged with committing fraud by failing to provide details of previous criminal convictions in order to make a gain. That alleged offence is said to have happened on June 24, 2009.

The Recorder of Leeds, Judge Peter Collier QC, oversaw the crown court hearing where a timetable was set out.

He said: “I’ve seen no pleas are being offered.”

Defence barrister Christopher Tehrani replied: “As far as Amjad Hasan is concerned, it is our indication to make a dismissal application at the plea and case management hearing.”

The court heard that if the application to dismiss the case were to fail, a two to three day trial would be held on April 14 next year.

Both brothers are next due to appear before Leeds Crown Court to enter pleas on Thursday, October 3.

The court heard that arguments must be served by September 19, and a response submitted by September 26.

Addressing Amjad Hasan, who was dressed in a dark suit and red tie, the judge said: “I’m going to adjourn this case now for the next hearing, which will be a plea and case management, on October 3.”

He reminded the defendant that he must attend.

“If you were to fail to attend court any day when you’re meant to be here, that will be a separate offence,” Judge Collier added.

At a previous hearing in June at Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court, Amjad Hasan’s legal representative, Khaleeq Zaman, said: “It’s a denied matter. He is a solicitor who stands to lose his career.”

Both defendants remain on unconditional bail.
