A Shipley grandmother died from multiple stab wounds to the chest and neck, Bradford Coroner’s Court was told today.

At the opening of the inquest into 84-year-old Louisa Denby’s death, senior investigating officer Detective Chief Insp Nick Wallen told the court her body was found by police at her home in Prospect Mount, Windhill, at 11.59pm on Monday, July 1.

Police officers had forced their way into the semi-detached house minutes earlier and she was found in a first-floor bedroom.

“Later a forensic post-mortem confirmed she had died from multiple stab wounds to the neck and chest,” said Det Ch Insp Wallen, of the Homicide and Major Inquiry Team at West Yorkshire Police.

The detective told the inquest how Mrs Denby’s grandson, Nathaniel Flynn, had been arrested in Westfield Lane, Idle, on suspicion of murder hours after her body was discovered at the house they shared.

No objections were raised to releasing Mrs Denby’s body for burial and Assistant Deputy Coroner Caroline Sumeray asked for her condolences to be passed on to the family as she adjourned the hearing pending the completion of criminal proceedings.

*Nathaniel Flynn, 26 has been charged with the murder of his grandmother and the attempted murder of a nine-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons. He also faces two other charges of assault.

Flynn has been remanded in custody to next appear at Bradford Crown Court in October.
