Bradford Council is not practising what it preaches when it comes to healthy eating, a councillor claims.
Despite its drive to get takeaways to sell healthier food, the Council still has vending machines stocked with sugary and fatty drinks and snacks at its leisure centres, said Liberal Democrat Councillor Geoff Reid.
Coun Reid (Eccleshill) first raised the problem in March, as the Telegraph & Argus reported, after noticing the snacks on offer at Eccleshill Pool.
At the time Councillor Andrew Thornton, the Council’s executive member for sport, said the matter would be discussed with the supplier.
But Coun Reid said while some changes had been made to introduce ‘guilt-free snacking’, the vast majority of the drinks and snacks were the same as before.
He said he remained hopeful more drastic changes could be made.
“The Council should be giving the lead on this really,” he said.
Coun Thornton said some products had been removed or replaced to give a greater choice of healthy products.
“We have reviewed the vending machine product range with our contractor and this now offers customers a greater choice of lower calorie, low fat, low salt and natural products.”
