Youngsters need a chance to be physically active for an hour each day to help fight childhood obesity, according to Keighley’s MP.

Kris Hopkins was speaking after attending a Westminster summit meeting convened by the British Heart Foundation to discuss how to tackle the problem.

Latest figures from the National Child Measure-ment Programme show 21.8 per cent of year six children in Keighley and Bradford are classed as obese.

Mr Hopkins said: “We are locked in a national battle with childhood obesity and the rising tide is not going to subside without action from politicians, parents, schools and children themselves.

“Just an hour of physical activity each day can make a very big difference. We also need to look at helping parents make better choices about the food they’re serving up, while protecting the next generation from the dangers of sophisticated junk food marketing.”
