A Keighley councillor is leading efforts to get empty flats in a Braithwaite cul-de-sac back into use.

Councillor Keith Dredge asked Bradford Council officers to work with the owner of the properties on Whinfield Close following complaints from local residents.

Coun Dredge believed 15 out of the 16 flats - in four two-storey blocks - had been empty for about five years.

He said it appeared that a private landlord had carried out refurbishment work on some of the flats in readiness for renting them to new tenants.

Coun Dredge, who represents Keighley West ward on Bradford Council, hoped Council officers could persuade the landlord to speed up the work.

He said: "Nothing seems to be happening. Our empty homes team are being made aware of it but there's only so much they can do.

"There's a need for single-bedroom renovated flats and there are 15 in Braithwaite not doing anything."

David North, the Council's empty homes and loans manager, said his team was aware of the cluster of empty properties in Whinfield Close.

He said: "Officers from both our housing standards and empty homes teams are working with the owners and colleagues from other services in the Council to resolve issues with fly tipping.

"We are advising the owner on the options available to help him bring the properties and land back into use, including advice on the standards that the properties need to achieve in order for them to be re-occupied."
