A vicious assault at a Bradford scrapyard has led police to ask the public for help in tracing the attacker, who drove away in a distinctive recovery truck.

And local councillor Mohammed Shafiq last night called on the whole community to pass on any information which could speed up an arrest.

A 36-year-old man from the Fifth Gear scrapyard in Birksland Street, off Bowling Back Lane, was seriously injured when he was assaulted by the driver of the truck.

The victim received a serious head injury and two weeks later is still in Leeds General Infirmary, in a ‘stable condition.’ Police have just released details of the incident, which happened at about 1.30pm on Tuesday, June 4.

The suspect is described as an Asian man, aged 30 to 35, about 5ft 6ins tall, of stocky build, with short dark hair.

He attacked the victim following an argument after arriving at the premises in the white recovery truck, towing a silver Honda car. Both vehicles were filmed on CCTV at the scrapyard and West Yorks police have issued the images in a bid to trace the suspect.

Coun Shafiq (Lab, Bradford Moor) said it was “a shocking attack.”

“My sympathy and heart goes out to the victim of this assault.

“This is someone who will be a son, a brother or a father and it is important to think about what his family must be going through at this time.

“Therefore I urge all community members in my ward of BD3 to contact the police with any information.

“This is a peaceful area and there is no room for this sort of behaviour in Bradford Moor,” Coun Shafiq said.

Anyone who recognises the vehicle or who has any information that could assist the investigation is asked to call Detective Constable Teresa Milburn at Bradford South CID via 101 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“Anyone who spots a similar vehicle is asked to note down the registration and pass it on to us,” a West Yorkshire Police spokesman said.
