Beleaguered residents struggling to park outside their homes must wait a few more months before a final decision is made on their predicament.

A meeting of the Bradford West area committee last night agreed with Bradford Council plans to introduce a parking permit scheme in the Grantham Road area, despite 30 objections.

But a suggestion by Councillor Nazam Azam (Lab, City) to extend the time non-residents are able to park – from one hour to two hours – on Grantham Road means a further Council consultation with residents is necessary.

A Council spokesman said: “It is recommended that the objections be overruled and the Traffic Regulation Order be implemented, but we will consult with Grantham Road residents on increasing the waiting time from one hour to two hours. If there are no objections, it goes ahead. But if there are, we will have to discuss it.”

The scheme, to be introduced near the University of Bradford, is aimed at stopping students parking there all day to go to lectures. But dozens of residents were unhappy that under the proposed scheme, each household would be given just one visitors’ parking permit. Other objectors were opposed to just one hour of parking for visitors.

One man told the meeting he was often unable to get off his drive because someone had parked across it. He said: “We are getting students blocking our drives. We are also getting people parking up, meaning residents across the street cannot park.

“We are dropping our children off and coming back five minutes later and there is nowhere to park.

“I am sick of ringing the Council or the police because I cannot go to work that morning because someone has blocked my drive.

“Some people are in favour of residents’ only parking to make sure we get parking in front of our houses.”

The Council said it sent letters to 400 people, with 30 objectors and two in favour replying. A Council officer said: “We then assume most of the 400 are quite happy with the scheme.”

The idea for the restriction came about after residents complained and business owners said their customers were finding it difficult to find spaces.

The Council scheme, covering more than 20 roads and back roads, would restrict parking to residents and their guests on Mondays to Fridays from 9am to 5pm. In some shopping areas, non-residents would be able to visit for up to an hour – or two hours on Grantham Road if Coun Azam’s proposal gets the go-ahead.
