An animal rendering plant accused of causing foul smells in Thornton and Denholme will again face the scrutiny of Bradford Council at a meeting.

Omega Proteins, based at Earling Works, has been the subject of numerous complaints in recent years, to the point that the authority asked for regular updates on the business to come before its environmental scrutiny committee.

The latest update will inform members that while there are still failings with some of the company’s operations, it is making “significant steps” to deal with them.

But a campaign group set up in protest at these alleged failings has claimed the Council is working too slowly in bringing Omega into line, pointing out that the only recommendation the committee will consider next Tuesday is to agree to look at an update in November.

Following complaints, the Council employed odour expert Steven Peirson to look at the plant’s operations, and he raised several issues. The company has since devised an action plan to tackle them, to be discussed on Tuesday.

Mr Peirson’s report says the bio-filters on site, which need to be operating at a high capacity to prevent smells from seeping out, were at times “sub-optimal.” He says: “This had the potential to cause unacceptable odour impacts in the area around the plant.”

Omega Proteins has recently applied for planning permission for a third bio-filter bed, and says it will review the existing system once a decision has been made. It has also pledged to test all its buildings on a more regular basis in a bid to prevent “fugitive odours”.

The committee will also hear that regulating the plant has cost the taxpayer. Although the company pays an annual fee to the Council to investigate complaints, the report says: “The cost to the authority of regulating this company due to the high numbers of complaints received far exceeds the annual fee.”

Lynnette Cadamarteri, of Stop Omega Stink action group, plans to attend the meeting. She said: “There has been little to no progress made to alleviate our concerns. We are extremely disappointed.

“We understand it is a complex situation, but we submitted a petition about this site in March 2012. It is now June.

“It is appalling that it has taken so long to look at these issues.”

The meeting takes place at 5.30pm at Bradford City Hall.
