Family-friendly activities are on offer this weekend, including the Lord Mayor of Bradford’s carnival-style Parade, the Urban Festival, the Otley Show and Haworth’s 1940s Weekend.

Held tomorrow to mark the end of Councillor Dale Smith’s year as Lord Mayor of Bradford, the parade includes a samba band, African drumming and street theatre in the city centre.

More than 1,000 people will parade in brightly-coloured costumes.

The theme for the parade is Sunshine, linked to the Lord Mayor’s Sprinkle Sunshine Appeal, which has given money to many local causes.

The parade will start from Norfolk Gardens in City Park at 12.30pm, wind its way through Tyrell Street and Sunbridge Road, and finish back at City Park at 2pm.

The departing Lord Mayor will be joining the parade at New Market Place after a service at the Cathedral to mark the end of his civic year.

The event will be followed by live music, street theatre, face-painting, balloon-modelling and games on the City Park’s big screen between 1pm and 5pm.

Meanwhile, the three-day Urban Festival continues today and tomorrow, which sees City Park transformed into a giant open-air nightclub, with four stages, a sound system and lighting, which will surround the audience with what is being described as “360 degrees of pure electro-jazz bliss”.

Bradford Council has also organised an assortment of flamboyant street theatre later today from 5pm, and on Saturday, from noon, including rock band Soundcheck and Taxi! – high-energy free-running blended with street dance in and around a black cab.

Meanwhile, the 204th annual Otley Show will take place tomorrow, featuring the Mark Stannage International Stunt Team and horse-riding mastery by the Galloping Acrobatics.

Spinning and weaving demonstrations, birds of prey displays, a Tug O’ War competition, dog shows and fun and trade stalls have also been lined up for the Bridge End showground.

Haworth is turning back the clock tomorrow and Sunday as the village stages its popular 1940s Weekend.

Profits from the event, which this year will mark the 70th anniversary of the Dambusters raid, will go to the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen’s Family Association.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will stage a fly-past featuring a Hurricane and Spitfire, weather permitting.

The parsonage car park will be transformed into an “airbase”, featuring a Dambusters exhibition, live entertainment and military vehicles.
