THE principal of a college in China discovered how apprenticeships work when he visited Basingstoke as part of an education exchange programme.

Linbai Guan spent a week shadowing Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) principal Anthony Bravo. The trip was organised by the Association of Colleges (AoC).

Through its various programmes, the AoC runs institutional twinning and learning-based partnerships as well as staff exchanges and joint education projects with international colleges.

Mr Guan is principal at a college in Xingtai – the oldest city in north China. His college has 20,000 students and specialises in agriculture, finance and technology.

Mr Bravo, principal at BCoT, in Worting Road, said: “This was a wonderful opportunity for us at BCoT to form established partnerships with colleges in China and share knowledge and best practice.

“Mr Guan was particularly interested in finding out more about how apprentices work in the UK. We discussed projects such as the proposed building of a restaurant in their college similar to The Restaurant at BCoT, and he saw how welcoming our staff and students were.”

Mr Bravo is planning to visit Xingtai on May 12 when he will shadow Mr Guan.
