Leading Baildon politicians Debbie Davies (Con) and Ian Lyons (LibDem) are celebrating good news this Easter – because Councillor Davies is expecting Coun Lyons’ child in September.

Coun Davies told fellow Bradford district conservatives on Wednesday and at the same time parish councillor Mr Lyons gave the news to his LibDem group.

Although not yet living together, the couple are known to have been an item for several months having fallen in love after Coun Davies’s separation from her husband, Shipley MP Philip Davies, in 2011.

The Davies’ had parted due to the pressure of work and distance and their divorce was finalised in November last year.

Coun Davies remained in Baildon with their two sons, aged 8 and 10, and continues to politically support Mr Davies by working as his part-time secretary.

Dad-of-one Mr Lyons is a former sergeant in the Royal Corps of Signals, who served in Kosovo and left the Army after an horrific parachuting accident in 2009.

Coun Lyons, 33, had done some 950 jumps when he smashed both legs after falling 100ft after his parachute got tangled.

Born and bred in Baildon, he caused controversy by forcing a parish council election which cost £10,000 in order to win his seat last year.

A “Green” Lib Dem, he describes himself on his website and Facebook as a vegetarian and animal-lover, devoted to democracy and international peace.

Currently studying politics at Bradford University, he is also a part-time HGV driver and is recuperating from a minor traffic accident.

It is understood he has previously considered standing against Philip Davies in the next general election scheduled for 2015.

Coun Davies and Coun Lyons both declined to comment on their happy news.

But Rob Higgie, deputy chairman of Shipley Conservatives, said everyone was totally supportive of Coun Davies and Coun Lyons and that it would not affect their different party-political roles.

He said: “I am delighted for both of them and wish them all the very best.”
