Disruption at Leeds Bradford Airport because of weather conditions

Some flights are currently suspended at Leeds Bradford Airport because of the weather.

The airport is advising people to contact their airline or tour operator and check the status of their flight before arriving at the airport.

It comes as Bradford Council reported that snow drifts of up to 10ft are still causing problems in Bradford today.

They are advising people to avoid Otley Road, close to Dick Hudsons Pub, where abandoned cars and snow drifts have led to the road closing.

Gritters will once again be out on main routes from 6.30pm this evening.

Meanwhile Hawksworth Lane is closed, as is Brighouse/Denholme Road from Fleet Lane to Thornton Road and also to Deep Lane, with JCB diggers being used to try and clear it.

The A629 Keighley Road has been closed northbound, because of snow, between Foster Park, Denholme, the top of Thornton Road, and Hill Top Road, Keighley.

All higher routes in the area are still badly affected by drifting snow and police have advised against all travel unless absolutely essential.

Trains are running normally between Skipton / Bradford Forster Square / Ilkley and Leeds.

Transdev has suspended its 696 and 697 bus  sevices because of the road conditions in the Denholme area, but it said gritters were on their way. Its 705 was running via Park Lane to the doctors’ surgery only.

Cravenlink buses 883 and 884 between Ilkley and Skipton were not expected to be running today.

There are no AccessBus services in Bradford, Calderdale and Leeds today.

In Bradford, the following services have been affected: 25 is not running, the 268 not serving Thornton Lane
425/427 - Unable to serve Drighlington Moor and North View Road on journeys into Bradford
500 only to Oxenhope
640/1 - Not using Morrison complex at Five Lane Ends and omitting The Bank at Thorp Edge.
659 not operating via Poplar Road/ Crag Road using Briggate/Crag Road instead.
682 - Not operating on Undercliffe Lane, using Killinghall Road and Otley Road in both directions.
696, 697 SUSPENDED due to road conditions in Denholme area, but gritters on their way;
702/3 not Serving Coronation Way
705 Keighley via Park Lane to Long Lee Surgery
710 from Keighley running via Highfield Road, Whin Knoll Avenue then normal route to Laycock
719 via Bracken Bank Avenue
762/5 not serving Sandbeds at Addingham
883 suspended
918 service suspended

The Highways Agency is advising drivers to plan for their journey before they set out, check the forecast and road conditions and to leave extra time if travel conditions are poor or delay their journey if the weather becomes severe.

Up-to-date information on road conditions on England's motorways and trunk roads is available on the agency’s website at highways.gov.uk/traffic or by calling the Highways Agency information line on 0300 123 5000.

No they are going into ungritted Morrisons Enterprise Five, was most surprised.

"No AccessBus services are running in Bradford"
No, was one at Morrisons.

Generally the problem is drivers in vehicles which are not suited for these conditions. As well as some drivers just being plain stupid but somehow passing the driving test and think they can drive!

Vehicles with tyres at the bare minimum and vehicles that are poorly maintained getting stuck and skidding as the lunatic behind the wheel just gives it gas thinking worn tyres will grip! Dumb people would be better suited at a circus rather then behind a wheel.

Then you have the boy racers and the odd idiot who gets his 4x4 stuck because he has low profile alloys on it which look bling but are terrible for these conditions.

If you are out driving, drive slow and steady in a low gear and keep momentum....helps if you keep your distance.

Invest in snow tyres, you only use them three months a year and you'll get a fair few years worth of service out of them.

Isn't it strange how I predicted this a couple of months back when we had the last heavy snowfall, and told you all how I'd bought snowchains, and got ever so slightly mocked for it. Have none of you ever heard of the 15 year cycle of weather patterns, where winter is so severe, well this is it the fifteenth year in the cycle. Hope you all enjoyed your laughs back then, and that the snow doesn't cause too many accidents now.

You had a lucky guess dell don't milk it (although I know I would if it were me).
At least if people are out sliding around in the snow they aren't using their gas which could apparently run out in under two days according to certain reports.

I had lots of jobs to do today, but didn't bother struggling with the car, and built snowmen with the kids instead, The neighbours did the same, so a few hours later when the snowplow and gritter came, they got up the street easily, and now it is clear for everyone. Not exactly rocket science is it? Anyway well done to the council - in atrocious conditions they've frankly done a great job!

Well Bradford Council last night were horrendous. This snow has been forcasted for at least 3 days yet when i got the bus from Wilsden to Girlington it took 45 mins to get to Allerton ( and the road wasnt too bad til it got to Allerton )

And when we got to Allerton the bus said we had to wait to have to see if we could get through.. 4 hours on the bus and in the end had to get a taxi.. Even though a taxi refused to pick me up at 6pm as well.

In that time we had 6 gritters went past.. 5 with snow plows on the front 1 without and only 1 was gritting and none even snowplowed the road.

Its even funny that the gritter even decided to turn down a street and got stuck because it wasnt gritted.. Ironic a bit.

However on Allerton road by the time i ended up home at 10:45pm there was 12 buses on Allerton road. Yes 12 buses and yet all was told by Control they were not allowed to go up or down Allerton road because the gritters were not gritting the road. Maybes the council should be making sure roads are actually gritted and getting the snow plows out when its needed not driving around like idiots not doing anything.

The 15-year rule

Bill Foggitt, whose family kept meticulous meteorological records since 1771, was convinced seasonal weather followed a cycle.
Outstandingly hot summers, he believed, occurred every 22 years, while severe winters repeated themselves across a shorter, 15-year span.

For example, winter 1947-48 was followed 15 years later by 1962-63, and again by 1978-79 the winter of discontent, each having that 15 year gap, each having extreme weather conditions.

And for the astute mathemticians among you, yes the last 15 year cycle was 2010, when we had another bab winter, for some reason though this has decided to repeat itself, and the reason I predicted it was not the cycle in itself, but the fact that the weather conditions we are no seeing almost exactly match those of 1963, when it snowed almost continuously from boxing day until easter, and temperatures fell so low, that in Eastbourne and Thanet the sea froze over.

dellorri says...
1:22am Sun 24 Mar 13

The weather conditions in question being an abnormally strong band of low pressure from scandinavia and siberia coming down to meet weak band of high pressure which would normally bring our spring weather, but the high pressure is not strong enough to force the low back and up away from us. This is exactly the same as happened in 1963.

The whole council is a farce from start to finish when it comes to the gritting. This is not the first time its happened.. Last time it snowed they did not even grit Wilsden Lane or Thornton Road. Yet according to their website bus routes are always done first.. I'd love to know their excuse for them not being done now.

LOL what a merry quipper, but if on the off chance that's a genuine question, and the weather trends REALLY are following 1963, this might give you an idea of what to expect....

1963: (2nd - 5th August)
THUNDERY RAIN: WARM/SUNNY IN SOUTH ON MONDAY.

From the 2nd to the 4th (the holiday Sunday), the weather was generally dull with shallow depressions off southern England giving outbreaks of rain and scattered thunderstorms; rain was heavy at times on the Saturday with falls of more than 25mm in many southern counties. Bank Holiday Monday, 5th, saw an improvement in the south - some south coast resorts had more than 10 hours of bright sunshine - but as a depression moved northwards in the North Sea, there was prolonged and heavy rain in many northern districts with falls exceeding 50mm in parts of northern England. Temperatures overall generally above average; warm locally in the sunnier south on Monday.

Ah...dear old Bill... Let's see..1979+15 =1994....1994+15=200

9....(only 4 years out)
please note also the winter period spans the year 94-95 which then made the next 15 year cycle 2010-2011 as I made clear in my next post, and IF you'd care to check it out you will see 2010-11 was a very bad winter. I usually hesitate to quote WIKI, but as these FACTS are easily checkable elsewhere I can quite safely do so...

http:// en .wikipedia .org/wiki/Winter_of_

I then posted afterwards, that my current prediction of this bad weather was NOT based on the CYCLE theory, but on the fact that the current weather conditions almost exactly mirror those of 1962-63. Also as you point out the numbers, it should be 1978-79/1994-95/2010
-11,
which as you can see from the quoted article fits the pattern, This year however does not, but it repeats the conditions.

LBA is mysterious place. It suffers a form of weather, which I believe is called speed fog. I used to live near there and I've witnessed this - it's strange. The wind blows to gael force, but the fog remains resident. There are very few examples anywhere else in the UK featuring this phenomenon.

A well spoken and articulate gentlemen, back in the 1970s, once claimed he heard the fly-past of a Lancaster Bomber, during this weather pattern. From his experiences in the air force he said that the engine sound suggested that the pilot was attempting to land. Spooky.

I promise that this man was not a nutcase. I'm sure that the LBA is very safe for air travel, even after heavy snow. I do hope that we get more sunshine now, as we've not exactly been 'Sun Blest' recently.

johnhem says...

the most unsafe part of the lba must be that affected by "idiot with lasers" syndrome. apparently it is a large problem when a plane had a laser pointed at the pilots face.
