UPDATE: Snow closes 170 schools and brings disruption for commuters - FULL SCHOOL CLOSURE LIST

Owen Williams posted this picture of gritters in action this morning on twitter Buy this photo » Owen Williams posted this picture of gritters in action this morning on twitter

Snow has shut 170 schools across the district so far because of concerns over pupils and staff safety.

Early hours and morning snow has made it a cautious start for motorists and commuters venturing out into another wintry blast with temperatures just rising above freezing.

Delays to flights are continuing at Leeds-Bradford Airport but the runway has now been cleared of snow and opened at about 11am.

Passengers are still being advised to check their flights with their airlines although officials at the airport are not expecting to have to close the runway again.

Meanwhile on the roads, bus services appeared to be running normally.

Traffic into the city centre was moving steadily despite slush, side roads were completely covered in slow particularly in the steep Undercliffe area where in some places the edges of pavements were  indistinguishable from where the side of the roads began.

Cyclists were struggling and pedestrians were wrapped up prepared for another day battling  the elements and potentially long, cold walks home if the snow continues to fall as predicted.

One lane on the M62 was closed due to the weather and driving conditions on the M1 across West Yorkshire are being described as hazardous.

Bradford Council services were also out and about – refuse wagons were on the roads as were gritters.

In the city centre, trails of grit were being laid to give sure-footing for those making their way into work on foot.

Bradford Council said on Twitter that all the districts main routes had been gritted and ploughed but warned snow was still falling.

But tweets back in response were reporting one inch of snow now lying on Bolton Road and one motorist was complaining “not one main road from Idle to Dudley Hill had been touched.”

A signalling problem at Ilkley station is adding to the problems.

Trains are currently only able to use platform 1 with services to and from the station being delayed up to 20 minutes. Bus services being affected by the weather include the  500, running between Keighley and Haworth only; 665: running to Oakworth 664 not serving Stanbury, 702 and 703 Braithwaite services running to The Ring, 762 and 765 running via Silsden not serving Woodside.

Metro is warning passengers to expect some delays to services with some staying on main roads if they can not access the minor roads.

Just looked out and just a slight covering of snow, an inch at most, so just do not understand all the above.
Sorry but think people just want an extra day onto the weekend, bet when I go to Morrisons car park full and store full and I will think how did they all get here.

Why should we be surprised, excuse 'its for safety reasons' yes, yes.
Does that mean years ago they weren't bothered about the children,I dont think so, they just made more of an effort like many people have to do to get to their workplace but its easier just to close the school

Sorry and I know i will be criticised for this but Teachers are pathetic...the amount of schools that had already decided they were shutting last night takes the proverbial. It appears that they just cannot wait for an excuse to get a free day off funded by us taxpayers. and if people who live 5 mins walk from their kids school weren't lazy sods and insist on DRIVING to school there wouldn't be problems! back to basics people

Well I have made it to work, and I have to take two buses in-order to get here! Buses are running a bit late but at least they are running. I dont see what all the fuss is about where they have to close schools, years ago we made it to school and I had to walk 4 miles to get there.

I live in Bradford, work in Keighley ; every single member of staff (from Halifax, Leeds, Steeton) have all made it in, without problem. Roads are clear, public transport operating (almost) as normal.
Dear Teachers - if you are doing one thing that is good today, it is helping keep the roads clear for those that can be arsed.
Enjoy your snow day.

But the main one was to escape the moaning English! Why can't you all just enjoy the snow, and let your children enjoy a day off school playing in the wonderful snow. Life's too short moaners!

Sam it is clear the picture wether it was taken with a phone or camera the position was from the driving seat. If it was taken by a passenger then the passenger was clearly obstructing the view of the driver.

DO passengers sit in your lap when you are in the driving seat.

The law states It’s illegal to use a hand-held phone or similar devices ie. camera's, Sat Nav's etc. while driving.

You must be blind or thick (or both) for not to see the pic taken from the driver's side.

Journey from Boston Spa to Mirfield took 50 minutes instead of 40 minutes, no big deal. Motorways and main roads all been cleared and gritted well.
As someone said earlier, the bonus of those teachers too idle to get to school, hiding behind the elf and safety banner, is that the roads were much quieter for the rest of us who want and have to go into work!

A strike in the summer holidays sort of defeats the point of a strike does it not??

There are few secondary teachers who will be happy about losing time with exam classes when then exam season is 7 weeks away!

It is one teacher, the head, under guidance from site managers who make the decision to close, not all these apparently lazy teachers. I'd also hazard a guess that most teachers have spent their apparent extra day off catching up with the work that they generally have to do on an evening and weekend- for which they do not get paid overtime or given time back!!

Oh I'm so distracted by the snow that I nearly missed the story about the council spying on us. I almost forgot about the thousands of people being forced out of their homes into smaller properties that for the most part don't exist. The snow blindness stopped me seeing that thousands will be entrapped into paying out more for their homes and council tax with no funds available for them to do so. I don't own a dog but I feel the story about some people not being as "civil minded" as they should be could well apply to me as the battle lines have been drawn and not by any member of the general public. The civil war has begun. What you going to do, build a snowman?

vandersar says...

I have to admit that of all the snow days we've had since i began teaching i can only remember two where it chucked it down all night and the following day. The rest of them were fairly tame in terms of snowfall and looking out the window now, it does seem unlikely that it would take me more than an extra 10-15 mins to get to work.

I'm also not going to pretend that i don't enjoy a few extra hours in bed or an hour or two sledging in the park but at the end of the day it simply isn't the decision of the teachers to close a school. A few months back we had similar conditions and we were all in school for 8:30 except those that live considerable distances away. The headteacher and the caretaker make the decision, if the school is open then you get there as soon as possible and usually by 9 o'clock everyone has made it in.

On the occasions we have opened in similar conditions however, attendance has been around 40%. This means students are serried into makeshift groups and sent off to do revision or other non-standard tasks. Normal lessons are left until attendance is back to normal and the class can all move forward. The majority of parents simply do not send their children to school when it is snowing - leaving schools to babysit the ones that do.

If you are angry at schools shutting then instead of issuing misguided rants about lazy teachers, why not write a complaint to the headteacher of your child's school and request that a copy of your letter be sent to every non-attending child that day. You could agree on an acceptable percentage of attendance with which the school could function as a school (not a crèche) and then demand the school open whatever the weather conditions. If the attendance falls below the acceptable percentage then teachers will have their pay docked for the day and you will pay standard childcare costs to the school which will then be redivided among the teachers (who will be grateful for the big increase in their salary that day) You will be waive any right to claim for or complain about injuries sustained by your child on school property and will be personally responsible for their arrival and return even when the bus companies cancel services.

wingerman11 says...
4:52pm Fri 22 Mar 13

Im sure some parents dont send their children to school when it snows, but the vast majority of those parents who work do thats for sure!
And yes, it is the Head teachers call as to whether the school opens or not, but one of the main factors in deciding that, apart from safety considerations for the children, and the state of the staff car park, is whether he thinks his staff will be able to make it in or not. And that in turn depends on how dedicated the aforementioned are, and how close to the school they live.
375 closures suggests a combination of over cautious Heads and teachers ringing in to say they cant get their cars out to me.

vandersar says...

Apart from the fact most of your argument is speculative (not to mention ignorant assuming you don't work in a school) ...The decision is taken at 7:00 which is before all but the furthest away have even left home - not the Teachers' decision and certainly not the Teachers' fault. The vast majority of parents do Not send their children in even when school is opened - my friend went in to Buttershaw to work this morning and their school shut at 11:45 with less than 50% of students having turned up.

Dont be so arrogant to dismiss someones view just because they dont actually work at a school.
Anyone wondering why Bradford schools are failing and at the bottom of the league tables only has to read your attempts at passing the buck and excuses to see the lack of leadership and motivation are two of the root causes.
