UPDATE: Snow closes 170 schools and brings disruption for commuters - FULL SCHOOL CLOSURE LIST

Snow has shut 170 schools across the district so far because of concerns over pupils and staff safety.

Early hours and morning snow has made it a cautious start for motorists and commuters venturing out into another wintry blast with temperatures just rising above freezing.

Delays to flights are continuing at Leeds-Bradford Airport but the runway has now been cleared of snow and opened at about 11am.

Passengers are still being advised to check their flights with their airlines although officials at the airport are not expecting to have to close the runway again.

Meanwhile on the roads, bus services appeared to be running normally.

Traffic into the city centre was moving steadily despite slush, side roads were completely covered in slow particularly in the steep Undercliffe area where in some places the edges of pavements were  indistinguishable from where the side of the roads began.

Cyclists were struggling and pedestrians were wrapped up prepared for another day battling  the elements and potentially long, cold walks home if the snow continues to fall as predicted.

One lane on the M62 was closed due to the weather and driving conditions on the M1 across West Yorkshire are being described as hazardous.

Bradford Council services were also out and about – refuse wagons were on the roads as were gritters.

In the city centre, trails of grit were being laid to give sure-footing for those making their way into work on foot.

Bradford Council said on Twitter that all the districts main routes had been gritted and ploughed but warned snow was still falling.

But tweets back in response were reporting one inch of snow now lying on Bolton Road and one motorist was complaining “not one main road from Idle to Dudley Hill had been touched.”

A signalling problem at Ilkley station is adding to the problems.

Trains are currently only able to use platform 1 with services to and from the station being delayed up to 20 minutes. Bus services being affected by the weather include the  500, running between Keighley and Haworth only; 665: running to Oakworth 664 not serving Stanbury, 702 and 703 Braithwaite services running to The Ring, 762 and 765 running via Silsden not serving Woodside.

Metro is warning passengers to expect some delays to services with some staying on main roads if they can not access the minor roads.
