New drive is launched to clean up Leeds Road area of Bradford (From Bradford Telegraph and Argus)

I thought it was only a couple of years back the taxpayer paid for the rows of houses to be tidied up ? Or was that Barkerend Road ? Either way, bout time some people took some pride in where they lived.

We all should do our own bit of cleaning So bradford becomes a better place for us all

Regen 2000 was the operation to clean up these areas. What a waste of time and money albeit European.
Such areas will never be kept clean considering the inhabitants living there are mostly gypsies of one sort or another.

It longed ceased to be a main road it is now a trading area , car park and rubbish tip.

T&A find out how many of the people living and using that area have been fined in the last year for litter offences, please.
If none ask why please.

Here we go again with another purge by either the Council or Police. Why do they let these situations get so bad and then have a purge, why not step in from the outset with a zero tolerance stance. Leeds Road, especially in the evenings, has long been an area where any decent-living people would never want to venture, its like a ghetto or shanty town.

More money invested into the Ghetto areas whilst many of the other areas need no such help as people have pride in where they live.

I'd also like to ask how? and why? this situation was allowed to come about. There were, over the years, enough voices shouting of the disgust. I walked this rd. every Sunday,1940s 50s on route to my gr.parents. Leeds Rd. was safe, clean, and a pleasure to walk. Why were voices ignored for so long. It would have made economical sense to have stopped the decay / rot then. The hoped for "arrest" of the decay and degeneration has come late, but welcome.

Totally agree. There are public rubbish bins literally every 50 yards down Leeds road yet the streets are knee deep in fried chicken boxes and plastic bags. The don't give a sh1t about the area they live in. No initiative will change this

Even if that were true 'sink estates' tend to be in their own remote enclaves - not on one of the major arteries in and out of the city and exposed to the public gaze. Why is it that areas where the majority of the population are Asian, have the most investment put into them? You never see headlines such as Eccleshill / Wibsey / Saltaire / Wyke, being given this type of investment. Is it that the politicians or councillors responsible for certain areas have more say in where our council tax is allocated, or is that once proud Bradfordians have given up trying to get anything for their communities?

Maybe the investments are agreed by the Asian councillors for the Asian areas.

I don't know how old you are but you're talking a load of tosh. I was born in Laisterdyke after the war and grew up in Bradford Moor and Thornbury. I was married and had my daughter in the 1960s and it used to be a pleasure pushing her pram up and down Leeds Road with many shops to call into or even just to look in the windows. The shop keepers and assistants were friendly and kept their premises and frontages clean. In other words they took pride in their shops and their jobs. The road began to change as the population also changed but it certainly didn't become the dump it is now for several years. I don't know if it's true but I was told a long time ago that the area is served continuously by refuse wagons - no weekly collections there. If it's true why is it such a tip? There's too much laissez-faire in this city.Why are non-Road Tax/ Insurance payers not rooted out despite having such a useful resource as Electronic Number Plate Recognition. Just walk up & down the streets with the equipment and....gotcha!

I agree to a certain extent of what you are saying, yes asain areas are an eye sore but I dont think the inside of there houses are. Yes they do just open their doors and throw dirty nappies out ( Ive seen this with my own eyes) and food. Leeds road is an eye sore but so is manningham people need to be made to clean up their own areas or get hefty fines. I travel up Leeds Rd every day and it never looks any different even when the sun shines it looks the pitts.

As a Pakistani and with no racism intended naturally I can tell you something for nothing. It is the Pakistani community with their run down areas and sly lobbying tactics that call the shots in this city and now it appears that the gypsies are our brothers in shame - the council has pussyfooted around these two communities for too long. Pakistanis have ruined really nice areas like Heaton - they should be embarrassed because Islam orders cleanliness and tidiness in both personal appearance and pride in cleaning their homes, gardens and streets. Please don't tar all Muslims with the same brush - it is only the South Asian communities that act this way - if the Turkish had been invited to work in England after the war - Bradford would have been a beautiful place. I feel sorry for the older people in this city as I have gone past your houses in areas such as Heaton and you keep everything in its original state with beautiful windows and doors and then the area gets overrun with the likes of us and they start building extensions and pulling out windows and doors changing the look of the area and leaving the debris in the front yard for 2 years - if you have a problem with this like I do - I suggest we all form a group and work together to combat this. I don't care if I have to give up my weekends giving free decorating and planning advice - it disgusts me that much.
