MP thrilled at Tour de France funds verdict

The Government announced that it would be supporting the Yorkshire leg of the Tour with up to £10 million in funding, and an MP claims it will bring in £100 million to the region.

A group of politicians led by Skipton MP Julian Smith met with ministers, urging them to provide funding to back up money invested by Yorkshire councils, charities and British Cycling.

Bradford Council has so far invested 400,000 Euros (£335,000).

The Government funding appeared to be in jeopardy when Hugh Robertson, Minister for Sport and Tourism, told Welcome To Yorkshire that their bid didn’t include enough information about the third UK stage of the tour – from Cambridge to London.

But during yesterday’s meeting the delegation convinceD UK Sport to free the money. Mr Smith said: “This fantastic news comes after months of hard work at Westminster and across Yorkshire from MPs.”
