Squad of officers will be out in force to deter hooligans from parks and play areas in Bradford

Wardens on video-equipped motorbikes are joining the fight to combat yobs on quad bikes who are terrorising people in parks and children’s play areas.

The Bradford Council wardens will join police on additional patrols targeting known hotspots including Bierley, Bradford, and Windhill, Shipley, during Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour Together Week.

Quad bikes, 4x4s and trail bikes have also caused damage to some beauty spots, including Baildon Moor and Shipley Glen, and there are concerns for the safety of families and walkers in those areas.

Last week, the Telegraph & Argus reported that masked quad bikers are tearing ruts across open spaces above Windhill and Wrose and putting children at risk. The ward’s three councillors Vanda Greenwood, Alex Ross-Shaw and Susan Hinchcliffe have called for action to protect the landscape and residents’ safety.

Now as part of a joint project to combat anti-social behaviour, problem riders will be targeted.

Councillor Imran Hussain, the deputy leader of Bradford Council, said: “Bradford district has some beautiful parks and moorlands and everyone has a right to enjoy these without fear or harassment from off-road vehicles.

“These spaces also need to be protected against the damage caused by quads, 4x4s and trail bikes.

“This dangerous and offensive activity is simply unacceptable and we will take very firm action against those who won't respect the law.”

The off-road vehicles have also caused noise nuisance and threatened wildlife.

Residents have witnessed ‘near misses’ involving off-road vehicles and deep ruts have damaged fragile heather and topsoil at Baildon Moor and Shipley Glen.

In Windhill, quads and 4x4s have been damaging grass verges, parks and open spaces.

In Bierley, quad bikes have been reported racing around children's playgrounds and playing fields. The Council hopes the additional patrols will deter would-be off-roaders, however they will prosecute and seize the vehicles of those caught driving or riding illegally on public land.

They will probably work round those "additional patrols" or have spotters looking out for them, even if seen, you still have to actually catch them.

If you haven't somewhere to legally ride one, you shouldn't buy, borrow or steal one.

once again the Flappit springs to mind, trouble is, the riff raff that ride these around the streets and parks do not ride them for off road fun, they are nuisance riders, thinking they are "cool"riding a quad around the streets, so they are not interested in having "somewhere legal" to ride, they would also need a trailer to transport the off roader to the legal area to ride, would never happen

there has always been the idiots on quads on our streets. the council takes away a perfectly good site at the flappits and then has a thrombie when people still ride their bikes/quads in the only place left to them. re-install the flappits, there were loads of responsible riders there (enough to make it worthwhile for a sarnie van to be there) at the weekends.
open the flappits and THEN go round the streets and round up the idiot fringe and hit them in the pocket with fines and the cost of another bike/quad.

The answer to problems with illegal off-roading is not the Flappit.

If they are illegal elsewhere they would be equally illegal on the land at the Flappit.

Stolen and with no insurance, helmets and driven by the under aged etc. on any land is the root problem.

Agreed Apollo, as I stated, these types do not want to enjoy the excitement of a bit of off road legal fun, they will always ride illegal machines on the road or on land where they are not supposed to be.
BUT the flappit is a start for legal riding.

These yobs can't be caught by cops on foot and the resources required to catch them can be very expensive.

There should be schemes similar to that of dob in a dealer, local residents can report these nuisance riders to the police, at least that way police can target the resources before the yobs get a chance to go back on the street!

Agreed, but you will only get the caring responsible riders there.

The riff raff and layabouts who own these things dont care about legality, and the illegality of it is a major draw. If it wasnt illegal, I doubt they would be as interested......

Put some barriers in place so they can't get on to the land with quads

Bring THIS to Bradford to generate some income, and then put the strikers on it and cut the ropes:

That would be cruel, what we need is some "less lethal" gun that could shoot about 50 feet and incapacitate a "suspect" without always killing them. Something like the X-12 Taser shotgun that the government ordered 22,000 live rounds for. They must be itching to try them out again. Much more fun than tasering a blindman with a boring old X-26.
