Number of girls arrested in West Yorkshire declines

The number of girls arrested by West Yorkshire Police more than halved between 2008 and 2011.

Figures obtained by the Howard League for Penal Reform reveal that there were 56 per cent fewer arrests during the three-year period.

West Yorkshire officers made 1,915 arrests of girls aged 17 and under during 2011 – a drop compared to 2008, when 4,357 arrests were recorded.

Frances Crook, of the Howard League, said: “It is encouraging to see that West Yorkshire Police are making fewer arrests of girls than they were in 2008, thanks in part to our effective campaigning.”
