MP Greg Mulholland calls for beer tax to be scrapped

An MP has repeated his plea for the annual beer tax to be scrapped.

Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Leeds North West), who chairs the All Party Parliamentary Save the Pub Group, made the call during Treasury questions in the House of Commons.

Mr Mulholland (pictured) repeated his belief that getting rid of the beer duty escalator would help brewery investment and employment, and assist pubs.

He said: “It has been evident to see that as a result of the reduced duty under the Small Breweries Relief we now have a thriving brewing industry, with more than 1,000 breweries in the UK, the most the UK has seen for over 70 years.

“I urge the chancellor to make a vote of confidence in Britain’s brewers by scrapping the beer duty escalator in the budget on March 20.”

I'm all for helping the landlord get the price of a pint down but I think it's too late. People have found other things to do rather than go spend hours in their local which are too often frequented by unsociable aggressive cliques. I don't trust landlords to pass on any reduction in duty either. Most of them are living on the breadline so they'd probably keep the money themselves. Nope, it was good while it lasted but the era of the pub is over. Soon it will be 'Spoons or nothing. Pity as well, what with all the good local brews suddenly springing up, the government ought to at least do something to help their growth.

To ensure a drunken, zombified populas that are too dumb to ask deep questions, the government will always ensure taxes are kept low....they daren't raise them too high as the population will sober up and awake to find they have been led down the proverbial garden path for decades!

Of course some won't agree as they too drunk on the BS they see promoted on national news...game on.

They are helping the breweries expand...by closing down UK operations and moving abroad!

A good idea.

Maybe if prices were to drop, people would be able to frequent their local pub more often, and have them become what they were once, a place where family and friends could meet and have fun. If that was to happen, maybe the younger generation(s) would be more responsible as its harder to misbehave if Mum, Dad and the Grandparents are there as well.
