Police officers cleared over pursuit of car that killed Bradford schoolboy

Two police officers investigated for their role during a pursuit of a car that knocked down and killed 12-year-old schoolboy Bilal Khizar have been cleared of any wrongdoing by a police watchdog.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has now concluded its investigation into the incident in which the West Yorkshire Police officers pursued a Seat Ibiza that was being driven by Zain Khan, who was later convicted of causing death by dangerous driving and jailed.

The car had been spotted and followed by the officers before the collision in Rooley Lane, Bradford, on Saturday, October 6, 2012. Khan, 21, of Savile Park, Halifax, also sped away from a lay-by after pulling over at the request of the police officers.

After hitting the schoolboy, Khan continued driving at speeds that reached more than 100mph.

Following Bilal’s death, an independent IPCC investigation looked into the circumstances surrounding police involvement with the Seat Ibiza driven by Khan.

It did not identify any evidence of criminal behaviour or misconduct by the West Yorkshire Police officers and concluded that the responsibility for causing the death of Bilal rested with Zain Khan.
