Reading Matters, the Bradford-based charity, raised about £8,000 at its first fundraising gala dinner at the Midland Hotel.
It was attended by 105 people who paid £45 each and later took part in a fundraising raffle and auction.
The Lord Mayor, Councillor Dale Smith, attending another function in the hotel, dropped in to say hello and pledge £1,000 from his Sprinkle Sunshine charity.
Barclays Bank agreed to give £3,000 to match money raised by the event.
“It was a great success for us and the guest speaker, Ian McMillan, had everyone in hysterics,” said Rachel Kelly, the charity’s chief executive.
