100 vehicles stopped in crime crackdown in Bradford
9:00am Friday 8th March 2013 in News
By Rhys Thomas, T&A Reporter
More than 100 vehicles were stopped by police in Bradford yesterday as part of an operation to target criminals who use the district’s road networks.
As part of Operation Northolt, officers were stationed in Barkerend and Manningham between 10am and 5pm with a brief to disrupt the everyday comings and goings of criminals.
Chief Inspector Paul Hepworth, who led the operation, hailed the day as a complete success, saying: “It was a really good day in Bradford. I was expecting us to do well, and we did.”
Officers stopped a total of 119 vehicles for various offences - and they even managed to arrest two people for theft from a vehicle on Harewood Street.
Of the vehicles stopped, 85 were transferred to police partner agencies such as VOSA for having things wrong with them. The issues included problems such as not being compliant with private hire rules and using red diesel.
A further 20 vehicles were collared for traffic offences such as dangerous parking and having tinted windows that were too dark.
Fourteen vehicles were seized for being unlicensed or uninsured.
Chf Insp Hepworth said: “It is all about tackling criminals, not about innocent members of the public. It is criminals using vehicles in Bradford that we are targeting.
“This operation is an everyday occurence – it was not a one-off. We are highlighting it so that the public is aware of what we are doing every day.”
Police work with colleagues from The Motor Insurance Bureau, Environment Agency, VOSA, Benefit Fraud, HM Revenue and Customs and private hire enforcement, as well as using technology such as the Automatic Number Plate Recognition system (ANPR), to catch criminals in the act.
Chf Insp Hepworth said: “While criminals continue to use West Yorkshire's road networks we continue to run operations like this.
“The advantage of intelligence-led deployment means that the police are able to accurately target active criminals and pursue them for traffic offences to disrupt their criminality. This approach ensures that ordinary motorists are not being swept up into stop checks in a blanket approach and criminals are then deprived of the roads.”

Another measure could be used.
Petrol stations have number plate recognition cameras to coulter bilking. Extend this computerised computer system to stop cars getting petrol which ae shown as being without tax, insurance or MOT. THE TECNOLOGY IS THERE AND CAN BE USED. It can be used to fire information to the police immediately
Starve these people of fuel and the rest will follow.

I really wish that they could do it everyday (as others have suggested), it would be the only way to eradicate this type of (all too common) offending.
Well done the Bill!

.
Please can we have more of these kinds of measures taking place in Bradford.
.
Lots of money frm llegal activities is being laundered via property development. Would like to see Police, HM Revenue and Customs, Benefits Fraud Agency etc doing more to tackle the opportunities to do this - there are far far too many cash in hand payments which enable criminals to launder money.

They have the technology to track and trace people without mot and insurance, but turn a blind eye. Many cars in bradford are un insured
50% of people use mobiles when driving, but some how the police never take notice
Tuffer penaltys are required

If this has proved such a success, it must be done more frequently. Uninsured or otherwise illegal drivers should be scared to drive.

It will not be brought back under control until or unless the Police and other agencies take it seriously.
While ever people think they have a better than even chance of getting away with no insurance, tax, MOT, driving on red diesel, using mobiles or a host of other motoring defects they will take the chance.
The penalties are derisory although taking cars off people is probably the ultimate deterrent.
I am no fan of the Police in Bradford. I find them to be badly led and largely ineffectual. However, in this case I am prepared to accept that they appear to have started, at long last, to begin to regain some of my faith in them.
The proof will be in how often they do this sort of thing and not just as occasional publicity stunts.
It needs to be done on the daily and nightly basis until some in the community finally get the message.

if you want to see illegal cars off the road and you see a car without valid road tax report it to the police and see what happens
That is the problem. The Police do not take it seriously.

More operations of this nature please.
Too many illegal vehicles on the roads.
As a taxpayer I want the success of this and further operations to be used to further the insurance premiums we are blackmailed to pay.
Failure to reduce insurance costs will mean that such operations are only part successful.
