Apperley Bridge pupils take on Swedish national rugby team during tour

Rugby players from Sweden tried their skills against Yorkshire students during a match at Woodhouse Grove School.

The Swedish under-18s rugby squad played at the Apperley Bridge School during their tour of the county over February half term.

One of their two matches against the West Yorkshire U17s Development XV was held at Woodhouse Grove.

Pupils at the school James Exley, Lewis Brooke and Tom Fountain, who are studying for their A-levels, were selected for the West Yorkshire team playing against the national side on their own pitches.

Paul Fountain, chairman of West Yorkshire Player Development committee said “Everybody enjoyed the game on and off the pitch, with great crowds coming to watch. For me the tour encapsulated everything that is great about rugby – making new friends, respecting your opponent and, most importantly enjoying the experience.”
