Bradford East MP David Ward yesterday gave his support to greater protection for residents against rogue landlords.
The Liberal Democrat pledged his support to a ten-minute Rule Bill on increased regulation of the private rental sector.
The bill calls for greater protections on tenants’ deposits and increases standards in accommodation around enforcement and energy efficiency.
It also calls for fair rents in all rented accommodation, prevents discriminating against people in receipt of state benefits and recommends a greater role for councils in addressing concerns in the private rented sector.
Mr Ward said: “With more than 36,000 rental properties in Bradford, I receive many complaints from local residents about rogue landlords and the quality of accommodation that they are renting.”
The bill is unlikely to become law.
