A handful of objections have been submitted over a bid by a newsagent in the Bolton Road area of Bradford to sell alcohol seven days a week from 7am to 11pm.

Six residents and Councillor Howard Middleton (Lib Dem, Bolton and Undercliffe) have contacted Bradford Council objecting to the move at the former post office premises at 1041 Bolton Road.

They have raised concerns over the sales of age-restricted products to underage children, proxy sales of age-restricted products, and underage drinking, as well as anti-social behaviour and noise nuisance from youths congregating in the area.

West Yorkshire Police have also requested three conditions be placed on any licence, should it be approved. These includes the installation of a CCTV system, staff training in responsible-alcohol retailing, and that a proof of age policy be operated.

Coun Middleton has been contacted by residents concerned about the application as the premises are very close to homes. In his representations to the licensing department, he states that there are already sufficient outlets of this kind in the area.

He says: “The rubbish and litter from Bolton Road News is already unacceptable and contaminates an area much further afield than just outside the shop itself, without throwing alcohol into the mix.

“Likewise the unsavoury elements who seem to loiter front and back of the shop can be quite initimidating.”

Other objectors complain of rubbish and acts of vandalism becoming an ever-increasing problem.

Mohammed Ikram, of Bolton Road News, has made the application, in which he states that he wants to turn the newsagent’s into an off-licence.

A decision will be made at a meeting of Bradford Licensing Panel on Tuesday, which starts at 10am in City Hall, Bradford.
