Keighley Civic Centre has brought in money and jobs and deserves people’s support, according to the chairman of the committee established to manage the facility.

The centre, in North Street, has attracted fierce criticism since it emerged it is £74,000 in the red.

But Keighley town councillor Lionel Lockley said he and his fellow committee members would do all in their power to make the building a success.

He admitted the initial aspirations for the centre had not yet been realised, but stressed that like all new businesses it would take time to achieve profitability.

“Remember that this was a disused neglected building when the town council took it on,” he said. “By employing Keighley company DAVRIC on the restoration, we provided new jobs for Keighley people and the result has seen the building increase more than seven-fold in value. It’s recently been valued at £1.5m.”
