It's ready, set, flip as Bradford district marks Shrove Tuesday

Pancakes were flying and flipping across the district yesterday as residents celebrated Shrove Tuesday.

In Ilkley, schoolchildren and staff from businesses competed in the Ilkley Rotary Pancake Races. The Grove was closed to traffic as shoppers and passers-by joined pupils and staff from schools lining the street to cheer on the competitors.

The event was organised by Ilkley Rotary Club, which stewarded the races and handed out goodie bags to the youngsters taking part.

A final, featuring winners of the individual adults’ races, was won by Joshua Owens, who works at Martha & Vincent restaurant, on The Grove.

Two races were also held for members of the Purple Patch Arts Group, which runs creative activities for people with learning disabilities, mental ill health or dementia.

Meanwhile, schools across the district held events to mark the day.

At Eastburn Junior and Infant School, reception class pupils tried their hand at making pancakes. The children took turns to weigh ingredients and mix them, then teachers cooked the pancakes on a stove.

* A pancake race which was due to be hosted by Bronte Rotary Club in City Park, Bradford, yesterday was cancelled because of bad weather.
