Police tackle problem parking in Ilkley

Insp Sue Sanderson Insp Sue Sanderson

Police plan to re-educate parents about parking cars around schools in Ilkley.

Inspector Sue Sanderson, of Wharfedale and Craven Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), says police are to organise patrols in the coming weeks looking at problem parking around schools in the town.

The issue of parking around schools, as well as general parking problems and speeding, was raised at a public Pact (Police and Community Together) meeting.

Insp Sanderson said: “We are paying paticular attention to this area over the coming few weeks and there will be some patrols around these issues, trying to re-educate some of the parents about parking more appropriately.”

She said other events are planned in the Ilkley area shortly, including action against dog fouling.

It might work there.

Then again it may not work there. Ignorant is rife in all. As a child we walked to and from school...the walking kept us fitter, on the way home we'd spend some pennies at the local shops and bakeries whilst mingling with other schools kids from our area.

Nowadays people are too lazy to walk or mingle with their community....then they blame each other for not integrating!

Re the parking...schools should allow parents to park in the school car park or other open area to reduce congestion on the immediate area. That way all the kids are in the cars and ready to go home rather then hanging around outside the school waiting for the parents to show up.

Then again some health and safety person would not agree to parent parking in schools.

Great to see the police dealing with local issues. Insp Sanderson's colleagues in other Bradford areas need to take a leaf out of her book.
Parking irresponsibly outside schools presents a danger to children. Past schemes to educate drivers have failed. Its time to stop pussyfooting and issue fixed parking tickets. Enforce the law - thats what it was made for.
Unfortunately in any case, when the police move on, the bad behaviour returns. The police cannot cover every school, every day. The school has to take some responsibility and post someone outside at start and finish times to shame drivers to park properly. They could also utilise no parking cones and collect them at end of school day. It does not have to be official police cones - as most motorists would get the message by unofficial school cones.
