A former champion boxer who left a 20-year-old pedestrian permanently disabled when he smashed into a bus stop during a 100mph police chase has been jailed for five and a half years.

Isaak Thompson lost his left leg after Luqman Nazir crashed his Subaru Impreza at the junction of Manningham Lane and Oak Lane, Bradford, at 3.25am on May 13 last year.

Mr Thompson, who needs further surgery which could include the amputation of his other leg, was sitting on a wall waiting for a bus when he became the innocent victim of the devastating crash, Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday.

His university plans were now on hold and he has been receiving counselling for post traumatic stress disorder, the court was told.

Nazir, a Leeds City champion boxer in his teens, sat with his head bowed as prosecutor Dave McKay described how he had climbed out of the wreckage and over his gravely injured victim to flee on foot. He was arrested a few hours later at his home in Farcliffe Place, Manningham, Bradford.

Mr McKay said Nazir was on bail at the time for a violent bag snatch in Thornaby Drive, Clayton, Bradford, on April 18.

He jumped out of a car at 11.05pm and hit 21-year-old Nazila Akbar in the stomach, snatching her handbag. She suffered bruised legs and pain in her shoulder.

On May 5, Nazir had been seen speeding at 80mph in Bradford in the Subaru Impreza but the police could not catch him.

On July 21, he pulled a woman by the hair and stole her friend’s £6,000 Peugeot car after they went for a drive with him.

Nazir (above) pleaded guilty to robbery, careless driving, having no insurance, dangerous driving, causing Mr Thompson grievous bodily harm, common assault and theft.

In 2010, he was locked up for 21 months for smashing a man in the face with his fist during a drunken row in Northcliffe Park, Shipley.

Judge Colin Burn, who watched CCTV of the police chase and the aftermath of the crash in court, told Nazir: “All that can be seen on impact is a scene of broken glass and various debris strewn across the road but we know that Mr Thompson lost his leg. Twenty years old.

“Many of the things that you would aspire to do yourself, he will not be able to do for the rest of his life simply as a result of your driving at ridiculous speeds, losing control of your vehicle and crashing it in that way.”

Judge Burn also banned Nazir from driving for three years.

Nazir’s barrister, Ian Howard, mitigating, said the injuries he caused Mr Thompson might motivate him stop a life of crime.

Commenting on the robbery after the case, Detective Inspector Stuart Lyons, of Airedale and North Bradford CID, said: “Nazir targeted his victim from his vehicle, knowing she was alone and vulnerable.

“He used unnecessary violence in order to remove her handbag and I am particularly pleased to see that he has now been removed from our neighbourhoods.”
