Aireborough Sub Aqua Club awarded £10,000 by Sport England

A sub aqua club is hoping to introduce more people to diving after securing a £10,000 grant from Sport England.

Aireborough Sub Aqua Club, which meets in Guiseley, will use the money to buy new equipment, and it is inviting the public to come along and try it out.

Chairman Trish Crawley said: “We have applied for this grant and we have just heard that we have got it. The idea now is to try to increase the number of people who know about what we are doing and to get people in to do try dives.”

The club meets at Aireborough Leisure Centre every Wednesday evening and goes on dives to the Capernwray centre near Lancaster, as well as Northumberland and the Red Sea. Trish said they were hoping more people would come along to the leisure centre to try out the new equipment.

Anyone over the age of 14 is invited to come along and try out the kit and to have a go at breathing through a tank in the pool. We take you to the bottom of the pool just to be able to experience what it’s like, because it does feel alien when you start doing it,” she said. “Once they get used to it a lot of people are amazed at how nice and peaceful it feels.”

She said one of the two tutors was currently teaching a course on snorkelling to Scouts and Air Cadets.
