Schools urged to donate books to help South African pupils

Primary schools in Bradford are being urged to donate unwanted text books to schoolchildren in South Africa.

The South African fruit industry has set up the drive to try to improve the country’s literacy rates. It’s estimated only around 20 per cent of of South African schools have libraries.

Running alongside the appeal is a national contest in which schools can win £2,000.

The Help a South African School competition invites children in Years 5 and 6 to create a collage related to a topic of South African culture. The winning school will receive £2,000 towards resources and equipment. The first runner up will receive £1,000 and the second runner up £500.

To enter, schools must register via helpasouthafricanschool.co.uk by Friday, March 1.
