The appointment of the new West Yorkshire Chief Constable Mark Gilmore was officially ratified today by the Police and Crime Panel.
Immediately after the decision was made at a meeting in Wakefield, he said: "I am absolutely delighted and the work starts now."
Mr Gilmore, a former Assistant Chief Constable with the West Yorkshire force, was appointed Deputy Chief Constable of Northumbria Police 18 months ago.
West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson admitted selecting the new Chief Constable had been a difficult decision but he was convinced the right choice had been made.
