A film made by Bradford students has been nominated for a national award judged by a panel including Doctor Who actor Matt Smith and Martin Freeman (left), who starred in The Hobbit.

The film, called Hopeless or Courageous? is nominated for Best Documentary in the 2013 First Light Awards.

The film follows an onlooker watching a group of young people, who labels them mugger, vandal, shoplifter and drunk. But a closer look reveals something more courageous.

It was a collaborative production between 35 students from Hanson School, guided by professional filmmakers at educational charity The Lighthouse Group.

Known as the “mini Oscars”, the ceremony will take place on March 19 at the Odeon Leicester Square, attended by film industry luminaries and celebrities presenting awards across categories including Best Drama, Best Animation and Best Film by Under 12s.

The awards celebrate young filmmakers across the country and provide them with a platform to showcase their work. They have the opportunity to write, act, shoot, direct, produce and work with lighting, editing and screening.
