A new web site has been set up to offer people in the district more information on healthy eating and advice on issues such as growing your own food.

The Bradford Council-funded site, called bWhatYouEat, aims to promote local food initiatives and food production, and is a hub of information for all food-related information in the area.

Local community groups, organisations and food producers are able to sign up to the website to become listed in the directory and food related events within the district, such as farmers’ markets, can also be listed.

The site has been created as a result of the Bradford Food Strategy, which itself was recognised with a national award last year.

To be listed on the site, community organisations must operate within the Bradford district and need to be involved in food-related issues.

Specialist local food producers can be listed in the directory but they need to be based in the Bradford district, and grow or make their products here. Local farmers, breweries, and honey producers may be listed as they produce food within the district.

Councillor Andrew Thornton, the Council’s executive member for environment, sport and sustainability, said: “Residents are taking a greater interest in where and how the food that they eat has been produced. This website will put the relevant information at their fingertips.

“Obesity and diet-related illnesses such as diabetes are on the increase so promoting a healthy eating message makes an important contribution to help reverse that trend.”

Councillor Hawarun Hussain (Green, Shipley) said: “The Bradford District Food Strategy highlights the need for people to understand the value of food and what impact it has on our health and environment.

“The Food Strategy promotes environmental sustainability, food security, economic prosperity, fair trading and the health and well-being of all residents.”
