A man who was well known for his commitment to the local brass band movement has died aged 68.

Ron Powell, who died at his Oakworth home on Monday, had been suffering with the onset of Parkinson’s disease.

He was a co-founder in the 1970s of Keighley Brass Band, which later amalgamated with Haworth Band. Although his instrument was the tenor horn, he played most instruments at some time. He also played horn with the Keighley Salvation Army Community Band.

Mr Powell ran Stanningley Paints at Keighley with his brother Bob. When Bob died, Ron reverted to his trade as an electrician and worked for Calderdale Council until his retirement.
