The need for work to improve a footpath between Braithwaite and Fell Lane in Keighley has been highlighted during the recent cold snap, according to a councillor.

Jan Smithies said several youngsters had fallen on snow and ice while using the Cat Steps to walk home from Oakbank School.

The accidents was revealed during consultation over plans to provide a new play area as part of improvements in and around the path.

Coun Smithies said: “This emphasises the need for improving the steps as a priority – both the drainage and the quality of footpath.

"Several children asked for lighting as they hate walking to and from school on the Gabba in the dark, especially when the weather is bad."

Coun Smithies (Lab, Keighley West) said the consultation was attended by about 25 children aged four to 14 as well as several pensioners.

She said: "Our Lady of Victories Primary School brought their whole school council.

"All feedback was very positive and we had lots of additional good ideas – special events in the play area such as puppet shows and craft days."
