A Coroner has ruled a Bradford nursing home seriously failed one of its residents who died from pressure sores.

Lesley Kyle, who was 58 and had no family, died on October 7, 2011, after developing sores which were not adequately treated, an inquest heard.

Mr Kyle, who had a series of health issues including schizophrenia and diabetes, had lived at Greystones Nursing Home in Parsons Road, Heaton, since December, 2010.

The Bradford inquest heard how he was in the habit of retreating to his bed.

A representative from the 25-resident capacity home that specialises in caring for adults with mental health conditions was in court to hear Coroner Peter Straker give a narrative verdict on Mr Kyle’s death.

Mr Straker said: “Mr Kyle was resident at a nursing home where there were serious failures to assess and address his risk of developing pressure sores.

“He went on to develop pressure sores which were not treated adequately from which he died.” The inquest heard from an independent expert medical witness how there should have been a better turning regime for Mr Kyle and that a special mattress on his bed could have helped.

Greystones owner Simky Munir said after the inquest that lessons had been learned at the home, which now has a new acting manager.

He said: “We do our best to care for our residents and it is always sad when one of them dies but we have learned lessons from Mr Kyle’s death.

“He was not always easy to persuade to move but there were other issues in his case involving the need for better communication and quicker assessments with other agencies involved in the care of our residents such as hospitals and the tissue viability unit.

“The Care Quality Commission has been kept informed and we are happy to work alongside them.” During previous inspections by nursing homes watchdog the Care Quality Commission, Greystones had not met all the standards for caring for its residents.

The last published report dating back to November, 2012, had also said improvements were needed in the quality and suitability of management at the home, which is registered with Bradford Council.
