The Liberal Democrats group is calling on Bradford Council to let the public know just where their recycling ultimately ends up.

Idle and Thackley councillor Alun Griffiths wants the authority to sign up to a voluntary scheme that aims to improve transparency around where recyclable materials go.

He said: “Everyone knows that recycling their rubbish is the right thing to do, but most people are completely unaware of what happens to their recycling after they have put it out.

“This new charter which has been developed by the Resource Association will let people know where their recycled materials have gone and hopefully encourage them to recycle more.

“There is clearly a demand for people to know what happens to their recycling. We don’t want to recycle materials that end up being dumped abroad in countries where people are paid a pittance for sorting it out. I am hoping to persuade fellow councillors to support the Lib Dems and let’s make sure we can be confident about what happens to our recycling,” he added.

The call is contained in a motion to a meeting of the full Council which is due to take place at Bradford City Hall from 4pm today.
