Anger over Eccleshill roundabout

A Bradford councillor is calling for changes to a signal controlled crossing after receiving a “torrent” of complaints from residents about how it operates.
Bradford Council installed the crossing in Harrogate Road, Eccleshill, near St Luke’s School, last summer to deal with concerns about traffic near the school.
That came after parents, who feared their children could be killed crossing the busy road junction, won a “compromise” after they had handed in a 400-name petition requesting safe pedestrian access to St Luke's School.
Parent Emma Heal had told councillors and officers that youngsters walking to school had to cross the roundabout, either on a blind bend or competing with traffic exiting the roundabout and a supermarket car park at speed.
So the road safety measures were put in which included the signal activated traffic lights on a continous loop on part of the roundabout.
But now Councillor Geoff Reid (Lib Dem, Eccleshill), who also lobbied for the measures, said it created needless traffic, backed up queues and had resulted in lots of complaints from residents.
He conducted his own survey of movements on the roundabout and crossing, with the majority of people surveyed in the area saying that they wanted to see the crossing used part time and activated by pedestrians or during school leaving times.
He has now written to Bradford East highways engineer, Andy Fisher, asking for a review of the way the signal controlled crossing is working.
Richard Gelder, the Council’s transportation development manager, said: “We are looking into the content of Coun Reid’s letter about issues surrounding the roundabout at Harrogate Road and will respond to him in due course.”

Now that's sorted any chance of getting the parking restrictions resolved around Thornbridge Mews, any deaths due to emergency vehicles not being able to access the old people's complex will be firmly at the hands of the council after knowing of this problem for over 12 months and doing nothing whatsoever about it.

the current set up is rediculous , sat in traffic up to leeds road at 't' time,
nearly get wiped out sat in a traffic jam on a round about coming the other way.
People failing to notice there is even a roundabout when coming up harrogate road and just chancing the junction, add a bus stop ON A ROUNDABOUT! who thought of all this!

One of his possible remedies is to relocate the crossing further up the road (according to his recent newsletter). This would come at a further cost and cause further disruption. I ask the question, why wasn't the proper research and planning done before the crossing was built, and before his subsequent support for what has proved to be either the wrong scheme or in the wrong place.
It would also appear Mr Reid is repeating his lack of thorough research with regard to the Victoria Road parking restrictions proposals. He has supported the proposals but has failed to take into account the views and evidence supplied by of some of the residents who actually live there. My neighbours and I have invited him in writing (with all the other councillors in the area) to view CCTV footage of the road where the proposals are to be implemented. This will show once and for all the actual traffic situation on the road 24/7 to all parties involved. This would mean the opinion of certain people who only pass the road during their travels, would not receive their current unfair bias. The council meeting about the matter were told incorrectly that for 18 hours a day the road is packed with traffic which is causing massive disruption and delays to road users. This is just not true.
I therefore ask the further question why has he, certain other councillors, and the council officers failed to inspect all the available evidence before drawing up and trying to implement yet another in our opinion seriously flawed scheme?
These proposals will affect our houses extensively as we have lived here over 40 years and have no off road parking available to us. Nevertheless the council officers and Councillor Reid have failed to view our evidence, and appear hell bent on pushing through the proposals which in our opinion are unfair and unjustified.
How many more schemes will need to be implemented which then need subsequent changes with financial implications because adequate research wasn't carried out to begin with.
We, the residents feel ignored, and that is just not acceptable.
