Objections as store and newsagent apply to sell drink seven days a week

A bid to sell alcohol at a discount store off Canal Road in Bradford is to be determined next week.

B&M Stores has applied to Bradford Council to allow its Kings Road store to sell alcohol seven days a week from 8am until 10pm.

It follows an application by a newsagents in the nearby Bolton Road area for similar hours, which has already drawn a number of objections.

The B&M Stores bid has attracted one objection amid fears of an increase in anti-social behaviour and vandalism.

In documents to be discussed at Bradford Licensing Panel on Monday, the objector states: “I live in an area where we already have footfall from the city centre where people regularly cause problems having drunk too much, ie shouting, kicking wheelie bins and being sick.

“Adding another outlet I’m sure will add to this. Cars are also a target having alarms set off and damage due to paintwork being scratched.

“Under-age drinking could result and as a result drunken people are a hazard to themselves, road users, and the wider public.”

The meeting takes place at 4pm in City Hall, Bradford.

Meanwhile Councillor Howard Middleton (Lib Dem, Bolton and Undercliffe) earlier told the Telegraph & Argus that he had been contacted by a number of residents who were concerned about the application for the former post office premises at 1041 Bolton Road.

Mohammed Ikram, of Bolton Road News, initially applied to serve alcohol Monday to Friday between 7am and 11pm, but subsequently amended this to include the same hours seven days a week.

As a result the date for representation has been extended until February 3.

Coun Middleton said he had been told that the original objections would be carried over.

Given the earlier objections, it is likely that the matter will go before a Council licensing panel for a decision.

Would not expect a DIY/Household store to be selling alcohol.

The BM store has various items for retail at hugely discounted prices. It is placed where people do the family shop and is near the city centre.

Selling alcohol from these premises should not bother the authorities as tesco down the road sell it and I reckon BM would sell it a discounted price which would be good.

They also sell discounted biscuits and never needed a licence as some may complain cheap biscuits could lead to binge eating

B&M already sell Beers Wines and Spirits at Thornbury and do very well from it so it was only a matter of time that Kings Rd were going to do the same.
As for selling alcohol til 10pm, thats not gonna happen as the store is only open til 8pm....!!!
Then theres the "fears of an increase in anti-social behaviour and vandalism."
Well that can happen anywhere as can kicking wheelie bins and scratching cars.
Personally i think its a good thing cos its going to give people what they want and also give Tesco a run for there money....!!!!! Good Luck and crack on...!!!

A biscuit license? Whilst not disagreeing that the trans fats etc are dangerous to people's health I really dount it will ever be so bad as to require licensing.

Alcohol on the other hand has to have someone responsible as the license holder, also someone to blame when it all goes wrong.

I see no issue with B&M selling alcohol, over and above it being on sale anywhere that is. As dangerous a poison if sold by B&M as it is by Ken Morrison's crew or Mr Brown the landlord or Mr Singh the newsagent. Or Mr Brown the newsagent and Mr Singh the landlord

We really ought to start getting a grip of this situation. Cheap alcohol is already widely available and the number of people contracting alcohol related diseases is rising ever higher. At the same time pubs are closing because the government is constantly increasing the price at which they must sell booze. Personally I'd rather close the off-licences and reduce the prices in the pubs where alcohol is sold in a controlled way. Britain's love affair with alcohol is going to kill millions if they don't start cutting the availability of cheap booze. Now's a good time to start. This licence should be refused.
