Pop icons such as Belinda Carlisle and Rick Astley will be on bill for May event
Eighties pop icons Rick Astley and Belinda Carlisle are on the bill of the first major pop concert to be held at Bradford Bulls’ Provident Stadium, the Telegraph & Argus can exclusively reveal.
The Super League’s Odsal ground will host The 80s Strike Back: The Ultimate Party – the first of three concerts being staged at the 25,000-capacity venue over the May Bank Holiday weekend – with The Real Thing, Roland Gift, Go West and Altered Images, backed by the Rewind Allstar Band, completing the line-up for Saturday, May 25.
Ryan Whitcut, general manager, said the club had been working hard behind the scenes to bring some of the biggest names in music to the Bulls’ historic home and will make an announcement about which act will perform on the Sunday in a fortnight’s time.
“We have been working on this for some time and are now really excited to have such a collection of music icon’s all coming to Odsal,” Mr Whitcut said.
“This is the first concert to be announced at Odsal and we are looking forward to more announcements over the next few weeks. This will really put Bradford on the map as a concert venue.”
A stage will be built at the away end of the pitch as part of the club’s plans to redevelop its stadium over the next three years, with plans to increase the capacity in 2014.
Mr Whitcut said he expected around 15,000 tickets to be sold for the 80s event and revealed concerts would be a “massive source of revenue” for the club.
“It allows us to showcase Odsal to people who don’t come to the rugby,” he said. “It’s so important that we get these people into Odsal.
Mr Whitcut said the club had been in talks with Bradford Council, which had been “really supportive” of its concert plans.
He also confirmed it may stage more concerts during the year, possibly in July and late August or early September, although was keen to make sure any events did not clash with other events including Leeds Festival and Bingley Music Live.
Priority tickets for The 80s Strike Back will go on sale on Wednesday with a general sale starting on Friday. They are available from £19.50 per person.
